ESIA approach mining sector - Burkina Faso

July 2022 - The Ministry of Mines and Quarries and the NCEA organised a workshop to assess the ESIA approach for the country’s mining sector.

Lively discussions between the participants highlighted that:

* closure and rehabilitation of old mines need more attention;

* social issues receive little attention in mining ESIAs;

* more coherence and collaboration on mining within the government is needed.

Carbon calculations demystified - Jordan

July 2022 - Carbon calculations were demystified at a two-day workshop in Amman. The participants took a deep dive into how climate change can be addressed in ESIA. Both sophisticated risk assessment and GHG quantification methods as well as more simplified checklists were covered. The good news is that the simplified checklist approach may already be a good first step towards more resilient or low carbon project options.
