ESIA approach mining sector - Burkina Faso
July 2022 - The Ministry of Mines and Quarries and the NCEA organised a workshop to assess the ESIA approach for the country’s mining sector.
Lively discussions between the participants highlighted that:
* closure and rehabilitation of old mines need more attention;
* social issues receive little attention in mining ESIAs;
* more coherence and collaboration on mining within the government is needed.

Carbon calculations demystified - Jordan
July 2022 - Carbon calculations were demystified at a two-day workshop in Amman. The participants took a deep dive into how climate change can be addressed in ESIA. Both sophisticated risk assessment and GHG quantification methods as well as more simplified checklists were covered. The good news is that the simplified checklist approach may already be a good first step towards more resilient or low carbon project options.

SEA for oil and gas has taken off - Senegal
On June 14th the SEA for the oil and gas sector has finally taken off. The first meeting - consisting of 6 ministries and representatives of civil society and oil companies - was led by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment. The topic of this meeting was how to organise transparency and participation in the SEA process. The NCEA acts as coach to the interministerial working group.

Follow up essential for mining sector - Senegal
June 2022 - The NCEA visited abandoned quarries in Senegal with the Directorate responsible for the monitoring of mining operations at the Ministry of Mines and Geology. This visit was part of our joint needs assessment on environmental and social risks and potential solutions for rehabilitation in the mining sector. As in many countries, ESIA follow-up activities - such as compliance with the ESMPs - is lagging behind.

Pilot ESF Mapping workshop - Ecuador
June 2022 - The World Bank piloted the ‘Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) map’, which is based on NCEA's and SAIEA's ESY map. The objective of an ESF map
is to analyse a countries' environmental and social (legal) system and necessary steps to meet one or more of the 10 environmental and social standards (ESS) of the World Bank.

MoU with the Ministry of Environment - Jordan
June 2022 - The Minister of Environment, Mr Muawiya Radaideh, and Mr Rob Verheem, director of the NCEA signed an MoU for cooperation in the field of ESIA and SEA. According to Rob Verheem: “It is inspiring to see how the Ministry of Environment is working to ensure that impact assessment addresses urgent challenges such as climate change.”

Workshop ESIA for the mining sector - WAEMU
May 2022 - The NCEA and IGF organised a workshop on ESIA for mining, for member states of the West-African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). Participants used the Mining ESIA Tool (MET) - developed by IGF and the NCEA in 2020 - to assess strengths and weaknesses of their ESIA system in relation to the mining sector. The results of the workshop form the basis for follow-up activities.
