More attention for closure and rehabilitation of mines - Burkina Faso

The Ministry of Mines and Quarries and the NCEA organised a workshop to assess the ESIA approach for the country’s mining sector, using IGFs Mining ESIA Tool (MET). Lively discussions between the participants - including government staff, representatives of private sector and civil society – highlighted that:

• closure and rehabilitation of old mines need more attention;
• social issues receive little attention in mining ESIAs;
• there is a need for more coherence and collaboration within the government about mining. 

The meeting was a follow up to workshop on ESIA for mining for member states of the West-African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), organised by the IGF and the NCEA earlier this year.
