Site visit to Senegal mines - follow up essential in ESIA process.

The NCEA visited abandoned quarries in the Kaolack, Thies and Diourbel regions with the Directorate responsible for the Monitoring of Mining Operations (DCSOM) at the Ministry of Mines and Geology. This visit was part of our joint needs assessment on environmental and social risks and possible solutions for rehabilitation in the mining sector. As in many countries, ESIA follow-up activities - such as compliance with the ESMPs - is lagging behind. We support DCSOM in strengthening this important step in assuring environmentally and socially responsible mining.
