Consultation on the new E(S)IA regulations for Zanzibar
1 July 2016
Bobbi Schijf visited Zanzibar (21st-24st June) to take part in a consultation round on the new E(S)IA regulation. This regulation has been developed by the Department of Environment and the Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA). It follows from the 2015 Environmental Law of Zanzibar, and improves on the old E(S)IA regulation in different ways. For example, E(S)IA is better integrated with other planning approvals, the screening and scoping steps are more clear, and decision-making more transparent. Participants from other governmental authorities, as well as from civil society, the private sector and academia commented on the draft regulation during the consultation. The regulation will be finalised in the next month.
