New diagnostic tool for ESIA mining sector - Ethiopia

The NCEA recently participated in a workshop to pilot a promising new tool to identify gaps in the legal framework for ESIAs for mining projects. This diagnostic tool - designed by IGF - is based on the ESY mapping tool designed by the NCEA and SAIEA. In a follow-up session, the findings of the gap analysis were shared with a broader audience and possible actions discussed.

Advice on guidance for ESIAs for Dredging Material - Colombia

The Colombian Ministries of Transport and of Environment and Sustainable Development are developing a Guidance (generic ToR) on ESIA for Maritime Dredging Projects. At the request of the ministries we reviewed the document. We appreciate what has already been accomplished, however our recommendation is to provide more information on several topics. Read our advisory report for the details.

SEA for ambitious vision Niger Valley

According to the Niger Ministry of Environment, development is too often project-driven rather than plan-driven. For this reason, the Ministry would like to develop a Vision for the Niger Valley 2052, accompanied by an SEA.

Strategic Environmental Assessment - a legal requirement in Niger - improves planning processes by assuring public participation, transparency and holistic consideration of social and environmental impacts. The NCEA is looking forward to coach the SEA process.

Join the IAIA21 session on Independence in IA

Potential lack of independence in preparing assessments is a long-standing criticism of Impact Assessment. After an initial discussion on this topic at the IAIA19 Conference, it is time for a follow-up session at IAIA21. Using an IAPA publication as background, we will discuss whether IAIA has a role to play in enhancing the independence of IA practitioners and reviewers. To kick off the discussion, what is your opinion? Please let us know by answering the two questions at the More information link below.
