The NCEA travels with DRR team to Brazil

Brasilia, 25 - 29 November - The NCEA travelled with a Dutch Risk Reduction team to Brazil. The DRR team supports the Ministry of Mines with advice on tailing dams in the mining industry in the state of Minas Gerais. This request for support was the direct result of a tailing dam failure that caused a few hundred casualties earlier this year.

Multi-annual collaboration with Mali

Bamako, 25 November - It is with great pleasure that we announce the signing of a collaboration protocol (2019 - 2022) with the Malian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. Activities will cover both the strengthening of ESIA (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment) as well as SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment).

SEA presentation - Zamboanga del Norte - the Philippines

Manila, 25 November - The Dutch Embassy hosted the official  presentation of the SEA results for land use planning in District 1 of Zamboanga del Norte. This voluntary SEA is an initiative of both province and municipalities of the District, and is supported by IUCN NL and the NCEA.

Talisay Luzon, 27-29 November - Government agencies and CSOs participated in a 3-day SEA introduction workshop. It is the second workshop of its kind, following the successful 2017 workshop, allowing for new agencies and CSOs to participate.

Follow-up: ESIA Lake Kivu transport - Rwanda

Lake Kivu, 15 November - After the NCEA's review earlier this year, the ESIA for the Lake Kivu transport project has been updated. The expert group that performed the review, also analysed the updated report to see to what extent the recommendations had been implemented.

What are the strengths and challenges of the ESIA system - Jordan

Amman, 12-14 November - “Every country that is committed to improving their ESIA-system, should do an ESY-mapping workshop”, according to one of the participants of the Jordan ESY-mapping workshop. In three days, a varied group of stakeholders in the ESIA process discussed the strengths and challenges of their regulation and practice.

Paramaribo, 11-14 November  - In order to be effective, ESIA guidelines for a specific sector should be tailor made for a country's context. Therefore, NIMOS, the environmental authority in Suriname, requested the NCEA to assist them with  the preparation of ESIA guidelines for their offshore oil and gas sector.

Georgetown , 4-7 November - The Environmental Protection Agency is expecting an increase of ESIAs in the oil sector because of the recent discovery of large quantities of oil. They asked the NCEA to support them with the strengthening of their ESIA review practice.
