Kenya: Capacity building workshops on SEA for county governments

8 February 2024

At the end of January, the National Treasury of Kenya, in collaboration with the Council of Governors, State Department for Economic Planning and the National Environment Management Authority, organised a capacity-building workshop on SEA for the members of the SEA taskforce. This taskforce was established in 2023 and consists of members from various governmental agencies.

The overall objective of the workshop was to build awareness, develop capacities to support the mainstreaming of SEA and to have a dialogue session on how best to mainstream the SEA process in the County systems. The NCEA contributed to this workshop with several presentations and working sessions on SEA and county planning.

The key takeaway from the workshop by the Taskforce was that a combination of political goodwill, national enforcement and sustainable finance are needed to mainstream SEA into Policies, plans, and programmes. The taskforce has drafted a communiqué, signed by all members, with commitments to take the next steps to ensure this.

It was an inspiring week, with interesting discussions by committed and enthusiastic participants. The NCEA looks forward to working further on this project with the SEA taskforce.
