Yemen

Yemen was the first country where the international department became active in 1993. Since than a lot of capacity was built and EIA guidance developed. The NCEA provided independent advice on several projects such as reservoir water and sanitation, dams and road programmes. Presently, the authorities responsible for environment and water are supported in strategic planning of Wadi Hajr in the south of Yemen.

Legislation in Yemen

Legal provisions for ESIA exist in Yemen since 1995, when the Environmental Protection Law was issued. EIA remained voluntary until 2005 though, when the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) got a legal mandate for some EIA-related procedures. Since 2006, the EPA has been preparing a new Environmental Protection Law and also ESIA guidelines are under development.
