MoU with the Volta Basin Authority
The NCEA continues to expand its activities with regional partners. In November, we signed an MoU with the Volta Basin Authority (VBA). The VBA plans to undertake ESIAs and SEAs for water infrastructure investments. We are happy to support the VBA and build upon our network and experiences in the six member states, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali and Togo.

Social impacts in ESIAs for mining - Burkina Faso
Social impacts are very important in the mining sector, but ESIAs for mining tend to focus primarily on environmental issues. Together with the Ministry of Mines and Quarries in Burkina Faso, we organised a workshop to address this gap.

Kenya is is undertaking an ambitious endeavour towards more sustainable development by integrating SEA in County Spatial Plans. The NCEA will support a programme for the SEA integration for the northern arid and semi-arid counties.

ESIA in Water-Peace-Security E-learning Course
Would you like to know more about how water-related risks link to conflict and how such conflicts can be prevented or mitigated? The Water, Peace, and Security Partnership developed an e-learning course, consisting of 7 modules. Bobbi Schijf (NCEA) contributed to module 6, with a video on ESIA and SEA as a mechanism to prevent conflict.

New Environmental and Social Assessment Decree - Benin
For Environmental and Social Assessment to be effective, it must be regularly evaluated and updated. This is why the Benin Environmental Agency (ABE) recently introduced their new Environmental and Social Assessment-Decree and Guidance. The Decree requires explicitly to consider climate change, gender and human rights in Environmental and Social Assessments.

Animation on ESIA Follow-up now available in French
Our final animation about the Follow-up phase, is now also available in French. In most countries, follow-up is an official step in the ESIA procedure and considered essential for the effectiveness of the ESIA process.
