ESIA diagnostic tool for mining sector officially launched at IGF annual meeting
Rob Verheem, director of the NCEA, will speak at the IGF annual conference about a new ESIA diagnostic tool for the mining sector. This tool will be officially launched during the session and illustrated with recent pilots in Lesotho and Ethiopia. It will also unveil steps, governments can take to analyse and improve their ESIA legal frameworks and processes in practice to support sustainable mining.

Two new animations on the ESIA process: step 4 and 5
We just finalised two new animations on the subject of the ESIA process. The animations are about Review (step 4) and Decision Making (step 5). They provide a 2 minute overview of the objectives and issues to take into account. The next - and final - animation in this series will be on Follow Up, and is expected early 2022.

In Amman we worked with the Ministry of Environment on SEA legislation, and updated the ESIA and SEA priorities for the next few years. An MoU to formalise our inspiring collaboration is in preparation.

Niger delegation visits the Netherlands
“Even if our countries are different, challenges are comparable", according to one of the Niger delegation members who visited the Netherlands. The Niger Ministry of Environment and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) collaborate on a strategic plan for sustainable development in West Niger. The NCEA will provide coaching on the accompanying SEA. The delegation was invited to learn more about the way the Dutch deal with climate change issues, water management and land use planning.

EA for oil & gas and the Senegal River - Senegal
In Dakar we caught up on environmental assessment for the oil & gas sector and the management of the Senegal River with partners such as the DEEC (national authority for environmental assessment) and the OMVS (Senegal river authority). We also established new contacts with the Ministry of Mines, donors and NGOs. We are looking forward to a renewed and intensified cooperation in the years to come.
