Hydropower

Hydropower is a widely used source of renewable energy. Its capacity is expected to double in the next decades. Although in some cases the generation of energy is the only objective, a dam can have other purposes as well, such as the provision of water for consumption and irrigation, or water management to avoid flooding. SEA can support governments in developing multi-purpose dam projects at locations that are economically viable and socially and environmentally acceptable. At project level, ESIA can subsequently assess (technical) alternatives in terms of purpose, location, capacity and type and identify impacts, and compensation, mitigation and offset measures.

Webinar on SEA for Hydropower

In 2021, the NCEA organised a webinar on SEA for Hydropower, where we discussed lessons learnt and recommendations based on an evaluation of SEAs for hydropower development in Asia and Africa. Watch the recording of the recording of the webinar here.
