7396. Technical collaboration with the AfDB

The NCEA received a request for technical collaboration with African Development Bank's Environmental & Social Safeguards and Compliance Department (SNSC). To further discuss and elaborate this request, the NCEA visited the headquarters of the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This visit resulted in a clear set of topics for collaboration.

Significant details

The following 6 areas of cooperation have been identified:

To start with in the last quarter of 2024: 
• Embed NCEA sessions on SEA in ongoing SNSC training programmes, either physically or remotely online 
• Joint learning journey on the environmental and social assessment country system analysis that the AfDB is undertaking, making use of NCEA's ESY mapping experiences in selected countries.

Mid-term/long-term, technical cooperation on:
• Supporting ESIA/ESMP follow-up in countries and regions where we intervene 
• Improving the quality of environmental&social assessment products through certification of specialised consultants 
• Technical cooperation on governance through support to environmental&social assessment associations with a broad membership, starting with the Secretariat for Environmental Assessment in Central Africa (SEACA) 
• Development of knowledge products/knowledge events on themes relevant to both NCEA and AfDB, such as on critical minerals.
