7019-03. Kunzila Hortihub Advice - Ethiopia

The Netherlands Embassy in Addis Abeba is assisting Dutch flower farmers to invest in Ethiopia. In a pact with the Ethiopian government, the old state farm in Kunzila has been allocated for this purpose. In the Pact, five Dutch flower farmers and  the two governments set out commitments to sustainable development of the horticulture hub, among others by adhering to the IFC environmental and social performance standards. The NCEA was to be asked to review the quality of the ESIA reports, but this did not happen in the end.

Significant details

Through its helpdesk function, the NCEA provided information on the ESIA requirements in Amhara to the Embassy, RVO and the farmers, throughout 2017-2019.

As the Amhara environment bureau EFoWPDA, responsible for administring the ESIA procedure, had no experience with applying the IFC performance standards, the NCEA facilitated a special training on IFC PS for horticulture projects in October 2019.
