Landry Fanou
Technical secretary
The NCEA received a request from the Guinean Environmental Assessment Agency (AGEE) to conduct an independent review of the scoping report and Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the mining project of the Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG) in Lola Prefecture, Nzérékoré Region, Guinea. Next to M. Landry Fanou and Mrs. Joyce Kortlandt, Mr. Alex Puisais and Mrs. Edy Blom were also involved in this project as technical secretary and quality reader, respectively.
SMFG is leading a mining project in the Guinée Forestière region, in south-eastern Guinea. This project concerns the development of the Mount Nimba iron ore mine. The mining concession is located in an enclave within the Mount Nimba reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its high biodiversity value. The project is being carried out in several phases; only Phase 1 is covered by the terms of reference and the scoping report.
At the request of the AGEE, the NCEA also produced an advice on the scoping report and ToR of the ESIA of the mining project of the Nimba Development Company (NDC) located in the buffer zone of the Mount Nimba World Heritage site. The NCEA therefore combined the country and site visit for both projects. Two independent advices are produced for the two projects respectively.
