The NCEA was requested by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in Bangladesh to provide coaching support to the Department of Forestry that is responsible for the execution of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the South-West region, including the Sundarbans. This SEA started in December 2019 and will be finalised in the second half of 2021.

Significant details

This SEA was requested by UNESCO because part of the Sundarbans are assigned as World Heritage Site and the values of this site are affected by external developments. The geographic scope of the SEA was extended to the South-West region to enable the assessment of these external developments.

The NCEA coaching for the SEA team of the Department of Forestry consists of training and advice aimed at meeting international good practice SEA standards.
