Workshop on environmental and social impact of mining - Niger
4 October 2022
“We now know there are ways for artisanal miners to clean gold without using mercury… We want to introduce that here!” said one of the participants after the recent workshop on the environmental and social impacts of mining.
The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Mining and Ministry for Environment. In addition to the impact of toxic materials in the artisanal small-scale mining, we discussed the added value of an SEA for the mining sector and how to best (financially) prepare for mine closure.
Our involvment in this workshop is part of the 3 year MoU between the Ministry of Environment and the NCEA. And although it was the first time we focused on mining in Niger, it certainly will not be the last!
