SEA for the Sankarani River Basin - Mali

21 October 2020

In the Sankarani river basin in Mali various (opposing) developments take place: artisanal mining activities, fisheries, agriculture, displacement of local communities due to earlier dam construction and migration from other parts of Mali. To face these challenges, the local authorities in Baya, Sankarani and Tagandougou want to start with an integrated sustainable development plan for the region.

Inspired by the Sourou case, they want to accompany their plan with a Strategic Environmental Assessment, to make sure that the process will go through an inclusive approach with all stakeholders involved. The authorities asked the NCEA to coach this process, similar as we did in the Sourou area. This programme is financially supported by VNG International.
