The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Communications and Sustainable Development of Aruba has requested for our advice. It concerns an independent review of the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) report for an open sea aquaculture project initiated by Petros Aquaculture Operations.

Petros Aquaculture Operations plans to farm Red Snapper, a commonly consumed fish species in the region. On land, the proposed project consists of a fish farm, processing plant and pier. At sea, about eight kilometers off the coast, the project will need eventually sixteen underwater cages.

For the review, the Dutch department of the NCEA (Commissie mer) asked the assistance of the international department. A combined working group was composed with two technical secretaries: one from our Dutch department (Commissie mer) and one from the international department. The Commission combined the project visit with a reconaissance visit to Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire to investigate the need to co-operate with the NCEA in the field of ESIA and SEA.

The Commission is currently reviewing the ESIA report for the aquaculture project. When ready, the report will be published here This link opens in a new tab (in Dutch).
