Kenya: Review of the SESA for Kenya’s nuclear power programme
16 September 2024
The last week of August a working group of the NCEA visited Kenya. On request of the National Environmental Management Authorities (NEMA), the working group is reviewing the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) for Kenya’s Nuclear Power Programme. Approval of the SESA by NEMA is a mandatory step for the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) to further develop the programme.
Besides Nairobi, the two coastal counties Kwale and Kilifi were visited, as these are the first and second locations under consideration for a nuclear power plant. Recognizing the sensitivity of the topic, the NCEA held numerous consultations with stakeholders from the government, private sector and civil society. These gave us valuable insights with which we can verify the completeness and quality of the SESA. We expect to publish the advice in October. More information on this project is available here.
We greatly appreciated the participation and open attitude of all parties involved in our site visit, especially NEMA and NuPEA staff who joined us the whole week.
