Ethiopia: Hawassa University hosts successful SEA workshop
9 April 2024
In response to a request from Wondo Genet College of Natural Resources and Forestry, Hawassa University, the NCEA organised a three-day workshop on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). The aim of this workshop was to enhance awareness and expertise in SEA, drawing enthusiastic participation from university staff and regional Environmental Protection Agency representatives.
The workshop covered essential aspects of SEA, including understanding its significance and distinguishing it from Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), and tailored case studies contextualized to Ethiopia’s environment. Participants also engaged in hands-on sessions, learning about SEA implementation steps from preparation to stakeholder engagement and management.
As part of a special programme for supporting Environmental Assessment in higher education, this workshop marks the beginning of a series of capacity-building efforts and initiates the establishment of a platform for Ethiopian experts, consultants, and academicians to exchange insights and experiences in ESIA and SEA.
This collaborative endeavor not only strengthens Ethiopia's environmental governance but also paves the way for regional cooperation and capacity-building in sustainable development practices.
