Guinea: ESIA, mining and biodiversity
12 November 2024
In the last week of October, the NCEA, together with the Guinean Agency for Environmental Assessment (AGEE), held a training to prepare the review of an ESIA for a new mining project in Bankan in central Guinea. The mining project is planned in the buffer zone of Parc national du Haut-Niger (the Upper-Niger national park), an important area for biodiversity. The training was based on two recent advisory reports by the NCEA for mining projects on Mount Nimba, which is another important area for biodiversity. With the knowledge from existing cases, participants identified what key elements they would look for in the new mining ESIA in Bankan. They also highlighted the importance of follow-up after approval of a mining project.
Next to participants of AGEE and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, representatives from other ministries and NGOs also attended. A Guinean television station reported on the workshop.
