ESY mapping Mali - strengths and challenges of the ESIA system

A varied group of stakeholders in the ESIA process - representatives of the Ministry of Environment and its National Directorates, other sector representation as well as expert consultants, enthusiastically discussed the strengths and challenges of their regulation and practice. Using the ESY mapping tool, it became very clear which part of their current regulation and practice works well and which part is in need of improvement. For example, follow-up is practically non-existent. One of the proposals is therefore to work on the Environmental and Social Management Plans of the EIA and its follow-up, including the improvement of participation by stakeholders. This and other actions will be further developed as part of the capacity development programme between Mali and the NCEA.
