The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) is currently working on the improvement of its ESIA and SEA systems, and asked for support from the NCEA in doing so. Following up on the ESY-map carried out in 2023 with NEMA, and the SEA training for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) last year, the NCEA was requested to support in the next steps.
SEAs are being planned for the update of the Ugandan Mining Policy and Integrated Energy Resource programme. A Multisectoral Technical Committee (MTC), in which NEMA is always represented by a senior officer, will guide and review these and other upcoming SEAs. In this multisectoral committee, NEMA plays a key role in guiding and training other members on undertaking good quality SEAs. With this goal in mind, NEMA requested the NCEA to facilitate both an introductory SEA training and an ESIA review training for recently joined and senior NEMA members. The participants were very positive about the trainings and stated that their knowledge on the subject of SEA and ESIA had significantly increased.
The NCEA will continue to work with NEMA on the Ugandan SEA and ESIA systems.
