Violent conflict is a recurring theme in the mining sector. Mining ministries in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali also face this problem, for example between the artisanal and industrial sectors. Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) can play an important role in preventing and managing violent conflict in the mining sector.

Significant details

Case studies of selected ESIAs in the three conflict-affected countries will analyse how this works in reality. The central question is how the development, validation and monitoring of mining ESIAs contribute to the prevention and management of violent conflict and what the impact is on the security context. There will be one case study for each country: Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali.
