A lack of environmental norms and standards in Burundi hampered the Environmental Ministry in executing its functions. Therefore it requested the NCEA to issue a memorandum on this topic.

Significant details

This memorandum (only available in French) contains examples of international environmental norms and standards, to assess their applicability in the context of Burundi. The Environmental Ministry could use these examples in one of the following ways:

  • To develop its own norms and standards, based on these examples;
  • To adopt some of these existing norms and standards directly, and gradually adapt them to the context of Burundi.

For more information on the three-year cooperation programme of which this memorandum is part, see the webpage of the Burundi Capacity Building programme.
