7309. IGF for Mining - Review of draft Guidance on legal frameworks in ESIA on Mining and Extraction

The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) has requested the NCEA to independently advise on the guidance for legal frameworks for Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). The NCEA has agreed to this request, convinced that this guidance will contribute to the knowledge on legal frameworks and ESIA in the mining sector at governmental level.

Significant details

In May 2020 we advised on the draft guidance and made some recommendations for further improvement. The guidance contains extensive information and valuable instructions on ESIA within the mining sector and beyond, and therefore is potentially useful for a large audience.
On July 8th, the NCEA participated in a webinar on Improving Legal Frameworks for ESIA and Management in the Mining Sector. The webinar was organised by IGF (Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development) to discuss its latest Guidance for Governments.

The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports more than 75 nations committed to leveraging mining for sustainable development to ensure negative impacts are limited and financial benefits are shared. It is devoted to optimizing the benefits of mining to achieve poverty reduction, inclusive growth, social development and environmental stewardship.
